Family Night Activity - Sour Taste
Supplies: You'll need lemon slices, glasses of water and a bible.
Activity: Have everyone sit together around a table. Hand lemon slices to each family member (you'll need one too!). Then, at the very same time, have each person put a lemon slice in their mouth. See who can keep it there for 30 seconds. While you're doing this, have family members look around at each other and enjoy the sour faces. After 30 seconds (or longer, if you have a few brave souls in your family), remove the lemon slices and offer each person a drink of water. Note: Your children may enjoy this activity even more if you use sour lollies instead of lemons. Your children can probably tell you about the lollies that ranks as the sourest of the bunch. Consider having some of this on hand even if you use lemons - it makes a great reminder for children to choose words that aren't sour. (You can hand it out after the activity if you like.) After time is up, discuss the following questions: - What were you thinking as you sucked on the lemon? (I didn't like it; I wanted to spit it out; it tasted terrible.)
- How can words be like the sour lemon taste? (They can be mean words; they can make you feel bad.)
- What kinds of words do people say that leave a sour taste in their mouths? (Mean words; hateful words; cursing; things that make people want to cry.)
Share: When people lie (Proverbs 6:16-19); when people use bad language (Proverbs 15:4); and when people gossip (Proverbs 11:13); it "sours" their relationship with others - just as the lemon made our taste buds sour. God wants us to avoid saying things that can hurt other people. Instead, He wants us to use words that are helpful and sweet.
